The economic crisis experienced by Brazil has made more and more Brazilians try to live abroad. Data from the Colégio Notarial do Brasil – Federal Council (CNB/CF) show that between June and November 2021, compared to the same period in 2020, the number of document handouts to reside abroad grew by 67%.
During this period, more than 912 thousand validation requests were made, while in the same months of 2020 544,000 documents were validated.
The booklet is a tool that allows national documents to be authenticated so that they can be internationally valid in countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention, signed in 1965, in the Netherlands.
According to the director of the CNB/CF, Ubiratan Guimarães, the increase noted in the search for this type of authentication indicates a demand from Brazilians who intend to stay in a foreign country for a longer period, either to reside or to study.
“In 2015, the National Council of Justice transferred the function of apostille to notary offices, taking it from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This facilitated access for Brazilians seeking the service, as the service took at least six months to be carried out”, explains the director.
Also according to the entity, requests for visas for studies or opening dual citizenship processes grew 131%, from 299.5 thousand in the second half of last year to 693 thousand in the same period of 2021.
Last year, documents issued to those who wished to study or obtain dual citizenship represented 55% of the total requests, while in 2021, they already represent 76% of requests.
According to the latest survey carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in 2020, there was an increase of almost 20% in the number of Brazilians legally living abroad compared to 2018.
Also according to the folder, 4.2 million Brazilians currently live outside the country. Of this total, 46% of Brazilians are in North America, 30% in Europe and 14% in South America.
The three largest communities of Brazilians around the world are the United States, with 1.8 million residents, followed by Portugal and neighboring Paraguay, with approximately 250,000 Brazilians in each country.
