The Municipal Health Department of Rio de Janeiro confirmed that the boy Benjamin Rodrigues Ribeiro, aged 7, died this Wednesday afternoon (9), at the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital.
He had been hospitalized for 10 days, in serious condition, after eating a poisoned candy with his schoolmate in the North Zone of Rio.
The hospital management informed that the child had brain death and that the entire recommended technical process was followed, being completed this Wednesday. The protocol lasted 48 hours.
According to witnesses, on September 30, a woman passed by the school where the boys studied and offered the children candy.
After eating the candy, Ythallo Raphael Tobias Rosa, aged 6, fell ill and was taken by his family to the UPA in the Del Castilho neighborhood. Then, the other boy, Benjamin Rodrigues, also fell ill and was taken to the same Emergency Care Unit.
Ythallo died the same day and Benjamin was transferred to Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, in serious condition. The autopsy report carried out on the body of the boy Ythallo Raphael showed that “brownish granules were found in the child’s trachea and gastric residues”, which indicate that it is what we know as “chumbinho”.
Police chief Marcus Henrique de Oliveira Alves, head of the 44th DP (Inhaúma), where the case was registered, explained that witnesses said that “a woman passed by the boys’ school offering sweets to the children. Ythallo took this candy, bit it and then shared it with Benjamim, who ended up being hospitalized.”
The woman would also have offered the candy to Ythallo’s 12-year-old cousin. He gave a statement to the police and said that he did not accept the candy because he had just had lunch and was not hungry. The boy also stated that he had never seen the woman who gave the chocolates.
The police are still trying to identify her. The investigation was forwarded to the Capital Homicide Police Station (DHC). The two police stations carry out searches and investigations.
Ythallo’s body was buried in the Inhaúma cemetery, also in the North Zone. The place where Benjamin was buried is still unknown.
