The second most commonly prescribed drug is linked to osteoporosis

A popular thyroid medication taken by 23 million Americans may be linked to bone loss, according to a new study. Levothyroxine – marketed under brand names such as Synthroid – is the second most commonly prescribed drug among older adults in the US. It is consumed by about 7% of the US population. The drug treats hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid, by replacing or providing more of the thyroid hormone that is normally produced by the body. Study authors from Johns Hopkins Medicine linked levothyroxine use to greater bone loss and bone mineral density over six years — even in older adults with normal thyroid function, the nypost reports.
