Faced with a second wave of the pandemic since January, the Ministry of Health has been conducting a mass immunization campaign in the capital in recent weeks with the two most advanced vaccines developed domestically, Soberana 2 and Abdala, the results of phase 3 clinical trials made public. Mexico: 48 deaths and over 700 cases in 24 hours

The Mexican Ministry of Health announced on Monday that another 48 patients with COVID-19 had died in the past 24 hours, while 703 cases of SARS-CoV-2 had been confirmed in the laboratory.

According to official figures, the death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in the country of 126 million has reached 221,695 dead so far out of a total of 2,397,307 infections.

However, the Mexican government acknowledges that the death toll is underestimated: data on excess mortality in March indicated that COVID-19 deaths were at least 60% higher than those recorded.

However, the death tolls reported in the last two days (50 and 48) are the lowest since April 2020. The decline is followed by a steady decline in cases, as the vaccination campaign continues at a faster pace.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Embrard also announced yesterday that the third phase of vaccine applications of Sanofi (France) and Walvax (China) will soon begin in his country. Earlier, the COFEPRIS supervisory body approved the start of testing of Sanofi product, which is based on recombinant protein technology, said Mr. Ebrard. Walvax, whose vaccine candidate uses technology similar to Moderna and Pfizer / BioNTech, wants its product to be tested on 6,000 volunteers.

The Mexican candidate vaccine, christened Patria (“Homeland”), will soon enter the second phase of clinical trials, said the head of Mexican diplomacy. The government wants the vaccine to be licensed for emergency use within the year.

The Mexican candidate vaccine is being developed in collaboration with scientists in the United States, specifically with technology from the Icahn School of Medicine (New York) and based on a protein developed by scientists at the University of Texas (Austin).

Mexico has so far received 33.5 million doses of vaccine from foreign suppliers, including Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Sinovac. Mr Ebrard said the government’s goal was to receive 40m doses in June and 65m in July.
