The secretary general calls on Russia and Ukraine to work together to open humanitarian corridors

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today called on Ukraine and Russia to work in coordination with the United Nations to allow the opening of humanitarian corridors in Ukraine in the wake of the Russian invasion of the country.

“I have proposed the establishment of a contact group consisting of Russia, Ukraine and the United Nations to look into the possibility of opening humanitarian corridors,” Guterres told a news conference in Moscow with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. .

“We urgently need such corridors to evacuate civilians, which will be ‘really safe and effective,'” he said.

Guterres specifically referred to the fate of civilians trapped in the Azofstal plant in Mariupol, which is under siege by the Russian army.

The United Nations is “ready to fully mobilize its human and logistical resources to help save lives in Mariupol,” he said.

He also expressed “concern over repeated reports of possible war crimes” in Ukraine, saying “an independent investigation is needed”.
