The Senate unanimously voted to abolish the winter time that ‘darkens our lives’

Will Americans turn the clocks forward for the last time this year? The Senate unanimously voted today to abolish winter time and the United States to follow only summer time.

“The change of time is an outdated perception, a source of stress and confusion. It’s just stupid, there is no other way to say it,” said Marco Rubio, the bill’s author. The Republican senator from Florida in his speech linked the change of time with the increase of “heart attacks and car accidents”.

Winter time “literally darkens our lives,” commented Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, where in December the night falls at around 4:15 p.m. In summer, however, the sun rises and sets more slowly.

The fate of this bill, however, is uncertain: in order to be implemented, it must be approved by Parliament and ratified by President Joe Biden, who has the right to veto it. The president has not yet taken a position on this issue.

The basic idea is that changing the time has a negative effect on the biological rhythms, especially of children.

The European Union had proposed in September 2018 to abolish winter time… in 2019. But in March 2019 the European Parliament voted in favor of postponing this change to 2021. Since then, with the crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic, the issue remains pending.
