The situation on the border between Belarus and Poland is deteriorating

Polish Prime Minister Matthew Morawiecki on Tuesday accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of being the “brain” behind the wave of migrants trying to cross into Poland from Belarus, warning that the “hybrid” attack would jeopardize the EU.

Morawiecki’s accusations come as thousands of desperate migrants are trapped in the cold on the Polish-Belarusian border, where the presence of troops on both sides raises fears of a conflict.

“Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko” is the perpetrator of the latest attack, but its mastermind is in Moscow and this is (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin, “Morawiecki said during a special session of the Polish parliament.

“Immigrants from the Middle East are being flown to Belarus and used as human shields to destabilize the situation in Poland and the EU. Defending Poland’s borders is tantamount to defending the eastern tip of NATO and the EU.”

Germany, which accuses Lukashenko of exploiting migrants by sending them to the border with Poland, has called for new EU sanctions on Belarus.

“We will impose sanctions on all those involved in targeted migrant trafficking,” German Foreign Minister Maas said in a statement, warning that the EU was working to “extend and strengthen (…) sanctions against the Lukashenko regime.”

Europeans have been accusing the Belarusian president for months of creating a crisis by issuing visas to immigrants and then sending them to Europe in an attempt to avenge the European sanctions imposed on his government by Brussels over the suppression of the Belarusian opposition after the 2020 presidential election. .

“It’s part of the Lukashenko regime’s inhumane approach and gangsterism,” said European Commission spokesman Peter Stano of Brussels, following EU intervention in 13 countries to prevent their citizens from leaving for Leuko.

Minsk has denied the allegations and said Poland was violating human rights by preventing migrants from entering its territory. Mr Lukashenko, a close ally of Russia, has said his country “will not kneel” in front of the EU.

For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov attributed the influx of immigrants to the West’s military “adventures” in the Middle East.

“Why did the EU offer resources to keep migrants heading to the Union from Turkey to stay on Turkish soil?” Lavrov asked. “Why can’t they help the Belarusians in the same way?”

Immigrants as a weapon

The crisis escalated on Monday, when hundreds of migrants reached the border on foot, wanting to cross into Poland. But they were trapped in front of a barbed wire fence set up by Warsaw, which has sent large numbers of police and military personnel to the area.

Poland and Belarus announced yesterday that 3,000 to 4,000 migrants, mostly Kurds from the Middle East, are in a makeshift border camp opposite the village of Kuznitsa.

Journalists do not have access to the spot, but images broadcast by authorities in both countries show hundreds of men, women and children in tents or even on the ground trying to warm themselves around fires as temperatures in the area approach zero. Celsius.

Poland has accused Belarus of using migrants as a weapon, insisting it would not open its borders.

In Lithuania, which also shares a border with Belarus, parliament voted on Tuesday to declare a state of emergency at the border as it fears trapped migrants will look for other avenues.

Moreover, the deployment of troops at the border has provoked reactions from both sides.

Belarus’s defense ministry says Poland has deployed 10,000 troops to the border without first informing Minsk and denouncing breaches of mutual security agreements.

The Polish Ministry of Defense posted on Twitter a video showing “a large group of Belarusian officers” near the refugee camp.

Today, European Council President Charles Michel is going to Warsaw to discuss the “EU border crisis”.
