The slowdown of Twitter in Russia was extended until May 15: the service will not be blocked yet

Roskomnadzor did not block Twitter, but extended the deadline for slowing down the work of the social network until May 15, 2021. This was reported in the press service of the department.

Roskomnadzor gave Twitter extra time for the company to remove all prohibited content on its platform. The department took such a noble step after the social network first changed the principles and speed of the existing information control service in Russia. So, according to the press service, after Roskomnadzor slowed down Twitter traffic, the social network removed about 1,900 out of 3,100 materials banned in the country with child pornography, suicidal content and pro-drug propaganda. It is worth noting that most of these posts have not been removed from the platform since 2017.

In addition, the department noted the increased rate of removal of illegal material. So, the moderators have already removed 580 out of 650 new links to prohibited content that have appeared. On average, the control service spends more than three days to “cleanse” the platform. It should be noted, however, that Russian legislation sets aside only 24 hours for the removal of illegal material from the moment the notification is received.

The press service said that on April 1, the department’s leadership held talks with the Twitter administration. The videoconference was initiated by the company manager Sinead MсSweeny. During the conversation, the Twitter administration asked what needs to be done to remove the traffic speed limit. The management of Roskomnadzor explained that the company needs to clear its platform of illegal material within the timeframe specified by law and comply with all the requirements of the rules governing the activities of social networks in Russia.

Twitter’s slowdown began on March 10, when Roskomnadzor announced that it was limiting the download speed of media files on the platform. On March 16, the department threatened to completely block the social network in Russia if the company continues to ignore the demands of the authorities. On March 23, the situation stabilized a little: the control service removed a third of the prohibited materials. However, Roskomnadzor considered the pace of clearing the platform unsatisfactory. After negotiations on April 1, the leadership of the department gave Twitter additional time in order for the social network to comply with the requirements of Russian legislation.

Roskomnadzor said that they will continue to interact with the Twitter administration to promptly remove all prohibited material. And when the social network complies with Russian standards, the department will fully remove measures to slow down traffic and exclude blocking of the service.
