The smallest vineyard in the world sells wines for 5,000 euros each

Tullio Masoni makes some of the finest wines in the world, at smaller vineyard of the worldselling each bottle for 5,000 euros. The strange thing, however, is that his buyers do not want to consume them, but to see them as works of art!

An exuberant businessman, art collector and former banker has created what he says is the world’s smallest vineyard in peak of a palace of his 16th century in the heart of Reggio Emilia, between Parma and Modena, on a stretch of land that has given Italy some of its most famous exports, such as supercars Ferrari and Lamborghini, and culinary products such as noodles, tortellini, Prosciutto di Parma and Ragù alla Bolognese.

The smallest vineyard in the world is cultivated on a terrace

The fact that the wine Masoni doesn’t end up on many tables at once which makes sense considering how it’s created. Its owner grows his grapes in terrace her Via Mari 10 -the address of the building is also the name of the wine itself- a remarkable location as the 1859 she was visited by Giuseppe Garibaldi, the revolutionary who helped unify Italy.

With an area of just over 200 square metersVia Mari 10 yields only 29 bottles of red wine a yearwhich Masoni then prices at the impressive sum of 5,000 euros each. As befits the cost, the bottles are not sold in a simple wine shopbut in one art gallery -Bonioni Arte- a few blocks away.

“My wine is a form of artistic expression, a philosophical challenge, something you can keep in your living room so you can talk about it with your friends and tell them about the crazy guy who put a vineyard on his roof.” Masoni stated in the CNN Traveladding that “My vineyard is like this: It is unexpected, it stimulates the brain, it triggers new thoughts”.

The art of the vine

The connection between wine and art begins with the fruit, because ta vines grow on pergolas that are actually works of art made by a local sculptor, Oscar Accorsi. “My grapes grab art as soon as they are born,” said Masoni.

The wine matures in oak barrels which is also sculptures of another local artist, Lorenzo Menozzi, and they intend to they represent a man and a woman. Masoni also commissioned Giuseppe Camuncoli, an acclaimed Reggio Emilia-born Marvel comics artist, to design a special version of the label of his wine. As a result, encourages its buyers to never open the bottles, but to treat them like works of art.

“I’m the only winemaker in the world who says you shouldn’t drink his wine,” he declared.

The vines, which are Sangiovese, are fed with eggs, bananas, Seaweed and nightingale droppings, according to Masoni, who argues that their “nourishment” also includes the voices coming from the neighborhood – the quarrels, the curses and the various dialects – which enrich and pollute the fruit, giving it an advantage in than the grapes of the field, which enjoy only silence.’

Masoni rejects the idea that his wine could be judged by traditional means, for example by isolating the flavors in its bouquet. “There is no skin or red berries in my wine,” he stresses.

When pressed about what the wine is really like in the glass, Masoni offers some unique tasting notes: “At first sip you’re very confused, but after a few seconds something comes to life on your palate that opens your mind to a new dimension.” , he said, weighing each word carefully.
