Qualcomm is due to unveil a new flagship smartphone platform – the Snapdragon 898 (or Snapdragon 895, as of now) – in early December. It is rumored to be 20% faster than the current Snapdragon 888 Plus, as well as more energy efficient due to Samsung’s new 4nm process technology. However, the first test of the Snapdragon 898 suggests that it still has a long way to go before the SoC reaches its maximum performance.
Snapdragon 898 first appeared in the Geekbench 5 test as part of a certain promising smartphone Vivo M2102A. In a single-threaded test, it has 720 points, in a multi-threaded test – 1919 points. For comparison, the Snapdragon 888 scores around 1200 and 3700 points, respectively. There are plenty of reasons why the new SoC gave way to the “old” one, but the main one is that a smartphone based on an engineering sample of SoC was tested, with the performance of the commercial versions of Snapdragon 898 everything should be fine.
The frequency of the Cortex-X2 super core was 2.42 GHz, the cluster frequencies of the Cortex-A710 and Cortex-A510 cores were 2.17 and 1.79 GHz, respectively. Actually, this is one of the reasons for the not very high performance – in the final Snapdragon 898, the frequencies will be higher. For example, the Cortex-X2 is expected to be clocked at 3.1 GHz. The Snapdragon 898 is also confirmed to have an Adreno 730 GPU.
