The Soviet Moskvich brand is revived in Russia

Russia is aiming to revive the Soviet car brand Moskvich, which could be achieved through cooperation with truck maker Kamaz and the use of a Chinese platform, two sources told Reuters. The new model is manufactured at the former Renault plant in Moscow.

Sources said Kamaz was in talks with its partner, Chinese carmaker JAC, to use its design and production platform to produce Soviet-brand cars. Both Kamaz and Moskvich declined to comment.

Moskvich is set to make a surprise return to Russia as Renault’s assets fall under state control after the French carmaker said it was selling its majority stake in the Central Institute for Research and Development of Cars and Engines, called Nami.

The Russian financial newspaper Vedomosti, which first reported the news on Thursday, quoted a source as saying that production would begin no later than the fourth quarter of this year.
