The S&P 500 Index opens modestly lower after the US inflation report.

The major stock indices in the US They started the day in negative territory on Tuesday as investors weigh in on the June inflation report. At time of writing, the S&P 500 was down 0.17% to 4,377, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.1% to 34,960, and the Nasdaq Composite was down 0.05% to 14,872.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported earlier in the day that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 5.4% annually in June from 5% in May, beating the market’s expectation of 4.9% by a broad margin.

Among the top 11 sectors in the S&P 500, the financial index is down 0.55% and the energy index is down 0.4%. On the other hand, the Consumer Staples Index is posting modest gains after the opening bell.
