The presidium of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) today unanimously nominated Olaf Solz for the chancellor candidate ahead of the elections on February 23, 2025. The official decision on the nomination is expected to be formally taken by the SPD congress, which will take place on January 11. Today’s suggestion comes after weeks of rumors and posturing about whether popular Defense Minister Boris Pistorius could be a more suitable candidate than Olaf Solz, who is blamed for the failures of the governing coalition. Last Thursday Mr. Pistorius, in a video message, made it clear that he does not wish to be a candidate for the anointing, calling Mr. Soltz as the “most suitable” for the nomination.
