The construction works of the new PPC unit in Ptolemaida have entered a process of testing and error control of the electromechanical equipment.

Technicians from the contractor TERNA, engineers from Mitsubishi Power from Japan and German engineers from Mitsubishi Power Europe are at the factory to “test” the thousands of pieces of mechanical equipment, to check the tens of kilometers of wiring and piping as well as superheated water and steam. individual operation of hundreds of individual electromechanical systems before the plant enters the test period.

APE-MPE spoke with two Greek engineers, Mr. Dimitris Sagianis, head of the contractor company TERNA who supervised the construction of the unit from the beginning of the project and Mr. Anestis Kefalas, who as a representative of PPC together with his associates is watching its construction and will be the one who will receive the unit before entering the stage of its commercial operation.

“For three days now, with the help of special diesel boilers, we have been in the process of drying brick structures in every part of the unit in order to remove the moisture that is trapped inside them,” said Mr. Kefalas, adding that this work is important and “will last.” about 15 days “. As a result of this process, as he explained, “water vapor appears to come out of the cooling tower of the 120-meter-high unit”.

In other places, such as in the boiler of the unit, there are German engineers from Mitsubishi Power Europe who in collaboration with their Greek colleagues have started to control its functions while in the turbine and the generator that are the heart of the power generation system, Japanese are working. engineers from the parent company Mitsubishi Power. In addition to the dozens of electrical engineers, engineers, electronics, computer engineers who have each taken control of the individual mechanical and electrical structures, there are dozens of designers who from the control suites of the company in Japan and Europe, oversee the overall inspection process. of the equipment functions of the unit.

Mr. Anestis Kefalas points out that the turbine generator, the boiler and the electronic components of the unit in their field “are the spearhead of today’s technology and are at the top of the European and global industry”.

As the head of the project on behalf of the TERNA company, Dimitris Sagianis, told us, in several parts of the factory “mixed levels of the company’s technicians coexist with PPC executives” while already in the key area of ​​the unit’s control “half of the technicians belong to PPC then they will take over its operation “.

From the PPC side, the lignite transport infrastructure projects (conveyors, etc.) will be completed in the next three months and it is estimated that the yard of the factory will start filling with solid fuel at the beginning of June. Also, the hot steam transfer pipeline to the Ptolemaida Heating (T / T) will start to be constructed in the next period.

According to the renewed schedule, the goal of the contractor company and PPC is at the beginning of September the unit to be put into trial operation initially under the responsibility of the contractor, then to pass into a mixed operation phase and at the beginning of December 2022 “Ptolemaida 5” after to be under the responsibility of PPC, to be put into commercial operation and to be interconnected in the electricity system.

The installed power of the unit amounts to 660 MWe gross (615 MWe net power) with the possibility of providing a thermal power of 140MWth for the district heating of Ptolemaida.
