The stand in Brasilia supports Brazil’s COP26 discussions

Many of Brazil’s discussions on the Climate Conference, COP26, take place in Brasilia, remotely. A large stand was set up by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), which supports the Brazilian structure located in Glasgow, Scotland.

On the fifth day of COP26, Environment Minister Joaquim Leite received Economy Minister Paulo Guedes to discuss solutions for the country’s transition to a green economy. Guedes acknowledged that the country needs to solve the problem of deforestation and stated how the transition should be for some sectors.

“This abandonment of old ways of doing things is painful for some sectors. There will be suffering for those who live, for example, in a coal mine, who explore a coal mine. There will be suffering for those who live today from felling wood. So a new world is coming at a very high speed and we have exactly to stimulate the growth of this new world while we are going to have a complacent look at this transition”, evaluated the minister.

What is said at the booth is broadcast live in Glasgow. The main objective of the idea, according to the minister of the Environment, is to facilitate the participation of authorities, without the need for everyone to attend COP26 in person.

“It was the way we brought to show the federal government acting as part of an environmental agenda for a green growth program. There are 10 ministries that are part of the inter-ministerial committee for green growth, and it was this structure that we set up to bring a real Brazil into the COP. We have the biggest stand ever made in Brazil there to show a real Brazil and real cases, and here we have the opportunity to show real cases for those who were unable to travel there. In an interactive and modern way, Brazil once again shows in the first days of negotiations that we have a leading role,” said Joaquim Leite to CNN.

Structure

The structure set up by Brazil this year in Glasgow, on the other hand, is the largest in the country at a United Nations Conference on climate change. The stand has 200 square meters, two broadcast studios and trading rooms. To translate Brazil’s participation in the COP, around 50 rounds of discussion have already been held in Glasgow and Brasília.

Another 50 panels are still planned until the end of the event, on the 12th. In total, around 300 people will participate in debates and negotiations in search of convergence in the environmental agenda at the Brazilian stands.

“The important thing for Brazil is to show the world that what the world expects Brazil already has as a national public policy. And we are there defending the country’s interests to bring other countries in a new direction. So that they can contribute like Brazil to be a solution to this challenge of a new green economy”, said Leite.
