The State Department has approved the sale of F-16 modernization kits to Turkey

The US State Department has informed Congress that it has approved the sale of kits to modernize the Link-16 tactical data link network, the communications system for Turkey’s fleet of F-16 fighter jets.

The news was announced by the Turkish news agency Anadolou, citing sources familiar with the matter and relayed by other Turkish media, but without specifying the number of packages that Turkey will purchase.

Ankara has made a request to the US to supply Block 70/72 upgrade packages for 79 existing fighters along with 900 air-to-air missiles and 800 bombs.

The transaction could modernize and extend the life of much of Turkey’s fleet.

Turkey is also asking the US to approve the supply of 40 new Block 70/72 Viper F-16s.
