The State Department welcomes the meeting of the Greece-Turkey High Cooperation Council

His upcoming meeting of the Supreme Council of Cooperation between Greece and Turkey which will take place this week in Athens is welcomed by the US as it underlines Department of State. Responding to a question from the Hellas Journal website, a representative of the US State Department noted that the US supports discussions between Athens and Ankara at all levels with the aim of ensuring calm in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean.

As the spokesman noted, “the United States welcomes constructive contacts between NATO allies Turkey and Greece. We are encouraged by the upcoming meeting of the Greece-Turkey Supreme Cooperation Council that will take place this week in Athens. The United States supports bilateral discussions at all levels so that Greece and Turkey can work together to promote peace, security, and prosperity in the region. The United States continues to encourage calm in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean among our NATO Allies.”

Regarding the issue of the sale of fighters F-16 in Turkey, the spokesman, as reported by the Athens News Agency, limited himself to stating the State Department’s standing policy that does not allow confirmation and comment on proposed sales or transfers of defense equipment until they have been formally notified to Congress. Finally, he reiterated that the US looks forward to welcoming Sweden to NATO as soon as possible.
