It is impossible to encapsulate the multifaceted personality of Iris Apfel in a single category. Textile entrepreneur, interior designer, model up to 97 years old, “matriarch of maximalism” as dubbed by the BBC… but perhaps it would be enough to call her, more simply, icon of fashion systema name that fits her perfectly.

It’s easy to understand how even now, less than a year after his death at the age of 102, the chasm he left in the world of fashion has not yet been filled. However, his oversized glasses and his flashy clothes live again in an auction organized by Christie’s: Unapologetically Iris: The Personal Collection of Iris Apfel.

Here, then, over 200 lots for sale that include everything – or at least a generous part – of the infinite universe of Iris Apfen. The auction, which will take place online (with a selection of some pieces on display at Miami, Palm Beach And New York), will start on January 28 until February 13, 2025 but it is already possible to see the items up for auction.

The colorful and imaginative dresses, children of his style, cannot be missing «more is more», branded Miu Miu, Saint Laurent, Dries Van Noten and Dior. There are also items born from collaborations on which Iris Apfel he worked, including jackets from his collection H&M of 2022, and there is no shortage of real high fashion gems: like the colorful designer feather fur Dior Haute Couture or the vintage dress of Norman Norell in polka dot taffeta.

Ben 18 pairs of maxi glasses with bright nuances, an infinite number of bracelets, a round hand-painted suitcase with his name on it and much more. In fact, there are also many furnishing objects that are part of this impressive collection.

A chair with a portrait of Iris Apfela pre-1950 silver service, ornate screens, as well as a green statue of Iris whizzing by on a scooter. Among the numerous curiosities, there is also a life-size wooden sculpture of an ostrich with Kermit the frog (character from the Muppets) which also served as a bar.

The starting prices are more than accessible: for some, in fact, the starting price is around 100 dollars although it is easy to imagine that the final sum will be much higher. In short, the appointment is marked, both for those who want to take home a unique piece but also for those who – rather than buy – want to take a journey among objects of great charm that belonged to an immortal personality capable of touching more than a century of history.
