The statue of Marilyn Monroe is indecent, in Palm Springs they want to remove it

Indecent, sexist, uneducative. These are some of the adjectives used by the inhabitants of Palm Springs, California to describe a giant statue of Marilyn Monroe which will be positioned in front of a local museum. They obviously don’t want it, even though she’s already been to the city.

The statue, over eight meters high, is called Forever Marilyn and is back in the town in the Coachella Valley after passing through various other locations. Here she had been between 2012 and 2014.

The image is well known and iconic.

The $ 1 million steel and aluminum statue depicts Marilyn in the film scene When the wife is on vacation by Billy Wilder, the one in which the wind created by the passage of the subway raises the skirt and reveals the legs of the actress as it passes over a ventilation grille.

Considering that the film dates back to 1955 and that the scene has been cited and shot in dozens of other films, one would think that the world has really changed direction. Part of the population doesn’t want it because it pushes the audience to look under the actress’s skirt.

Even the director of the Palm Springs Art Museum, Louis Grachos, is against it. “I find it extremely offensive at the thought of the guys who come out of our museum and the first thing they see is the underwear of this huge sculpture of Marilyn.”

There is also a petition against the placement of the statue, which the local administration has already decided for three years. Is called Stop the misogynist #MeTooMarilyn statue in Palm Springs and has exceeded 40 thousand subscriptions. It was promoted by the former director of the Palm Springs Art Museum, Elizabeth Armstrong. He says the statue promotes an act of sexual harassment, upskirting, taking a photo under a person’s skirt without consent.

For her, “the statue is blatantly sexist because it almost forces people to look under the skirt of Marilyn, who instead wanted to be taken seriously as an artist and not just considered a sexual icon“. The PS Resorts group that bought the statue is of another opinion and, through the administrator of the Palm Springs Hilton, talks about benefits to tourism. “It makes most people very happy and is a tourist attraction, not a work of art.”
