When you think about the future Anna Polukhinarrived in Italy after escaping from Mariupol, in Ukraine, only pronounces the word “work”. This is her first goal since she was forced to leave her country due to the war, which broke out on February 24th. Mariupol, a port city on the Sea of Azov and 40 kilometers from the Russian border, was the first to be targeted. “I want to help my mother and my relatives who stayed in Mariupol. When I arrived in Italy for almost four months I was unable to talk to them because the city was completely isolated. Now, my dream is to start a new life here.».
Today Anna is a volunteer at the #HelpUkraine hub in Milan, activated by Avsi with the support of Acri, where since May 2022 refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine have been assisted. «This is where I found support as soon as I arrived at the Milan station. Thanks to the hub, I received first aid but I was also able to fill in the documents necessary to obtain medical assistance. They helped me write a resume to present to companies and I received free accommodation».
But now Anna, who worked as a hairdresser in Mariupol, wants to try to live a life that tastes like everyday life, like home. “A life like everyone else’s, paying the rent, building a future for me and my family. That’s why I’m looking for a job that can make me financially independent». His family remained in Mariupol, where it is estimated that the victims now live in a half-destroyed building. «There are no windows, no water, no electricity. My mother and my other relatives go out during the day to light the fire, warm up as best they can and cook». According to the estimates of Petro Andryushchenko, assistant to the mayor of Mariupol, exiled to Dnipro, of the approximately 425,000 inhabitants of Mariupol, just over a quarter are left.
