The Stories We are, Noemi: “When your daughter has leukemia”

When he was not yet three years old, Matilde was diagnosed with leukemia. «It was January 14, 2021» told us his mother Noemi, who decided to share their story to give strength to the many parents who find themselves living the same condition. “At first there was only despair, I was afraid of losing my daughter. We went for a routine check-up and the world collapsed on us ».

When the treatment process began, Noemi took her daughter by the hand and accompanied her along the most difficult journey: the battle against the disease.

«I had thought about quitting my job too, my shop opened ten years ago and which for me is like a third child. Fortunately a dear friend was by my side and it didn’t happen ».

Matilde underwent courses of chemotherapy for several months. “Thanks to the support of doctors, health personnel and many loved ones, we have never stopped seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.” And that day came, last August 13, when Matilde finished her cycle of chemotherapy. The lioness has won her battle: complete remission of the disease. That day she was born for the second time and together with her family she started a new course in her life.

«I hope my voice can help many families not to hide, not to experience the disease as a taboo. You are not alone. Sometimes the light can be stronger than the shadow. It can be glimpsed in the smiles of the people who are by our side, of the doctors, of our children », continues Noemi, recalling the words of the oncologist who accompanied Matilde during her illness. “When you see children without hair you shouldn’t take pity, because those children are real warriors without a mask.”
