The Stories We are, Siro and Jimmy: “We are a family, why can’t we adopt?”

Siro and Jimmy have been in love for almost twenty years. They met in chat, “when chat did not yet exist as they are understood today,” says Jimmy. And from the first message they never broke up. Between Naples and Palermo, the respective cities of both, the love story that both were waiting for was born and also a long distance acquaintance. Then, Siro and Jimmy decided to take the first step: talk to their respective families.

“At the beginning it was not easy,” says Siro who works as an accountant in Naples. “They needed time to get to know our world and understand the love that has bound us since the beginning and continues to bind us today.” Siro and Jimmy got to know homophobia especially when they started looking for a house to live in together and they were often told: ‘Where are your wives? You are not a family, we do not rent the house to you ». But “luckily,” Siro smiles, “we haven’t suffered any serious attacks.”

In 2016 Siro and Jimmy got together civilly and after a while they started thinking about expanding the family. “But we have clashed with the Italian law that does not allow homosexual couples and single people to adopt. Why can’t we be considered a family?“. Today they are both part of the Family Revolution movement which is starting to present applications for adoption by same-parent families and single people in various courts of Italy. “In our country we are experiencing a deep bureaucratic vacuum and this does nothing but transform the rights that should belong to everyone, a privilege for the few”.
