The story of ice cream: From a delicacy of kings, everyone became happy

You usually hear it when the schools open. The first day. There in Agiasmos. Among all the achievements and adventures of the summer, the company was always looking to find the one who ate the most ice cream! It was something like a custom.

And somehow the ice cream was connected in our minds with summer. Of course, (and) that has changed, now. Sometimes the refrigerators emptied in the middle of Autumn or even a little later and refilled mid-edges around Easter. Now, however, the enjoyment is not seasonal. You can eat a good ice cream even if it is covered with 15 points of snow outside.

This, after all, should be the enjoyment of the delicacy that was once a privilege of the Kings. Continuous and unstoppable. And for those who were surprised by that ice cream for many years after its discovery was the prerogative of blue bloods, they have only to read the text that follows…

An exquisite delicacy only for kings

The history of ice cream begins in China. Legend has it that the ancient Chinese tasted an early version of ice cream as early as 3000 BC. However, the sources that tell us that as early as 1200 BC are safer. the inhabitants of the vast country enjoyed something like frozen rice pudding!

In addition, during the 5th century BC, in Ancient Athens, you could find ice mixed with fruit and honey in the market!

If we move to his time Of Alexander the Great we will also find something there that looks like ice cream. If we return to China we will find the first one, who escaped from the fruit and got closer to what we know today as ice cream and was none other than the maker of the Tang Dynasty who found a way to make delicious mixes of ice and milk!

This most icy form of ice cream is also found in Europe and is said to be one of the “booty” of the great explorer Marco Polo.

In 1533, when Catherine of Medici married Henry II of France, she brought to her new homeland a frozen dessert of sweet cream. This dish seems to have been the forerunner of the sweet that made and enchanted the blue bloods in the early 17th century. the French chef of King Charles I of England who, as a monarch, even gave him an annual allowance to keep his recipe a secret.

What you read above has two common denominators. The first is that no one can claim paternity with certainty and the second is that the common people were excluded from this enjoyment.

The modern form of ice cream and the Anglo-Italian “battle”

Things changed dramatically, however, when the offspring of a family of fishermen named Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli entered the game, who in 1686 opened the “Café Procope”, in the heart of Paris, the first café of the French capital, according to some and the first in the world which immediately becomes a hangout because of a specific recipe.

The Sicilian chef mixed milk, butter, cream and eggs and cooled his delicacy before serving it in small porcelain bowls, eventually giving him the title of “father of Italian ice cream”.

According to historians, however, the first official ice cream in human history is the creation of Antonio Latini (1642-1692), who was in the work of the Spanish regent of Naples, who is said to be the first to record the recipe of “sorbet” his, a milky sorbet that made him famous.

At the same time, French confectioner Nicolas Odise describes plenty of fruit ice cream recipes in his celemente, though none would be more famous than that ice cream with cream, sugar and orange juice.

On the American continent, iced food made a noisy “entry” in the mid-18th century. It is alleged that the “importer” of the item in the US, was a central government official, who, on an official trip to Europe, tasted the dessert at a meal and was thrilled.

In 1744, a Scottish settler who visited the home of the governor of Maryland fervently recorded the treat he received. It was nothing more than strawberry ice cream. It is the same year that the entry “ice cream” made its maiden appearance in the English Dictionary….

The first ice cream factory in the United States was founded in 1851 by Jacob Fassel, who was fatally christened “the father of the ice cream industry.” That year, it is estimated that the average American consumed one teaspoon of ice cream a year! Two centuries later, the annual consumption of ice cream by an American citizen exceeds 27 kg!

By the outbreak of World War II, ice cream had become another US symbol. Research had shown that ice cream boosts the morale of the army! This is what the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini saw and hurried, although the Italian ice cream was world famous, to ban its sale in Italy, condemning it as “very American”!

The history of ice cream in modern Greece

The Athenian aristocrats first tasted the frozen delicacy in 1835 at one of the secular events of the Bavarian Prime Minister Armasberg.

In 1840, the businessman Kardamatis opened the first patisserie in the city at the junction of Aiolou and Evripidou streets, offering ice cream, among other things, and turned it into a popular delicacy, which the Athenians passionately enjoy. It is said that the daily collection of the store reached 400 drachmas, while during the holidays it exceeded 1,000, astronomical amounts for the season!

Shortly after the arrival of her refugees Asia Minor in Greece, who brought with them ice cream recipes, one after the other the production workshops open while in the streets the first ice cream makers with wheeled ice-refrigerators appear.

In 1934, Greece acquires its own dairy and ice cream unit. The Sourapa brothers, from Arcadia, return with plenty of money from Chicago where they were immigrants and set up the National Dairy Industry (EVGA). Two years later they will make a revolution when they present to the Greeks the “stick” ice cream, the ice cream in a cup and the cone with chocolate and almond.

The “stick” is what gives them their first patent. The first, that is, standard ice cream in Greece and in fact with the approval of the General Chemistry of the State, which certifies the quality. The rest is a frozen story that still excites our palates.
