The Secretary of Education of Rio de Janeiro, Renan Ferreirinha, spoke to the CNN 360° on the implementation of the ban on the use of cell phones in the state’s schools.
According to him, the measure has been successful, with 62% of institutions fully adhering to the new rule.
Ferreirinha highlighted that before the ban, the use of cell phones was very common in 95% of schools, with only 5% adopting some form of restriction spontaneously.
“Today we have 62% with full adherence and 38% does not mean that it is not prohibited, but that they are facing some natural difficulties in this process”, he explained.
Support from educators and parents
The secretary highlighted the support received from educators and parents. “For teachers, for educators, this is a very important measure, they have embraced them a lot, they are helping us a lot,” he stated.
As for those responsible, Ferreirinha estimates that 95% were in favor of the measure from the beginning.
To address parents’ concerns about communicating with their children in cases of emergencies, the secretary recalled that schools keep their phones fully operational, as has always been the case in the past.
Student adaptation
Regarding the students’ reaction, Ferreirinha observed a gradual and positive adaptation. Children up to 10 or 11 years old adapted quickly, returning to playing traditional games and interacting more with each other after the first few days.
For teenagers, the process has been slower, but the secretary believes it is worth it.
“I usually talk to teenagers and ask them, what kind of school do you want? Let’s try to liven up the group more, let’s try to do one more thing in the physical education activity, think about trips that are appropriate for the school”, commented Ferreirinha, emphasizing the importance of making school more interesting for young people.
The secretary concluded by reinforcing the main message of the initiative: “The important thing is to send a clear message, that the student’s connection has to be with friends, with teachers, with the school and not with their cell phone”.
