The Swedish Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador for explanations after the death of Alexei Navalny

The Swedish Foreign Ministry summoned its ambassador for an explanation of Russia at Sweden after the death in prison of the dissident Alexei Navalnyas announced today.

The European Union must act against political repression in Russia. This becomes even more important after the February 16 death in prison of Alexei Navalny” in Russia, Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said in a statement.

The Swedish government also took the initiative at the European level to consider new sanctions against Moscow, according to the statement.

The European Union and the US have already imposed a series of sanctions against Moscow since the war broke out after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Swedish diplomacy summoned the Russian ambassador for an explanation a few hours after a similar decision by Berlin.

The British government summoned diplomats from the Russian embassy for an explanation already on Friday night to tell them that Russian authorities are held “fully responsible” for the death of the Kremlin's number one critic.

The death of Navalny, 47, in a remote Arctic prison where he was serving a 19-year sentence after surviving a 2020 poisoning he blamed on the Kremlin, was announced on Friday. He died after three years in prison.

Westerners have unanimously blamed Russian authorities for the death, which strips an already weakened opposition of its leadership a month before presidential elections expected to once again consolidate Vladimir Putin's power after years of suppression of all dissent.
