“The system is truly immune to fraud”, says Barroso about electronic voting machines

The minister of the Federal Supreme Court and former president of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) Luís Roberto Barroso once again defended the security and reliability of elections in Brazil.

During an event at the State Judiciary School in Rio de Janeiro, this Wednesday (22), on freedom of expression and democracy in the digital age, the minister said that all security mechanisms in electronic voting machines were checked and tested, making the system one of the most complete, safest in the world and “truly immune to fraud”.

“We have isolated electronic voting machines completely. They never enter the system. So, even if someone manages to overthrow the Superior Electoral Court system, you can’t affect the outcome of the elections, because you have no way of checking the electronic voting machines. This is the great security”, points out the minister.

Barroso also recalled that the electoral system is validated by various institutions, including the Federal Police.

“The program that runs in the ballot box is validated by all political parties. It is validated by the Federal Police, by the Public Ministry, so there is no way to defraud. The urn just doesn’t run if someone messes with that program. The system is truly immune to fraud, and accusing the system of fraud is just a regrettable political strategy,” he said.

Regarding fake news, the minister considered that they should be fought by everyone, especially political parties, to prevent false accusations of fraud or manipulation from being brought to justice.

“The circulation of fake news among candidates has to be repressed on the candidates’ initiative before the Electoral Court. What we managed to do in 2020, and I hope we can do it again in 2022, is to minimize attacks on the integrity of the electoral system, with false accusations of fraud, manipulation, that is impossible to exist”, concluded the minister.
