The Taliban killed two wedding guests because they were listening to Afghan folk music

Fighters of Taliban killed two wedding guests because they were listening to music, local officials and eyewitnesses said. The act was condemned by the Taliban government.

A relative of the victims said the Taliban opened fire during the wedding in the town of Sorhud because the guests were listening to Afghan folk music. Two people were killed and two others were injured.

“Young men put music in a separate room. Three Taliban arrived and opened fire on them. “The two injured are in serious condition,” said the witness.

Kazi Mullah Adel, a government spokesman in Nangarhar province, confirmed the incident, without elaborating.

From Kabul, government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid did not confirm the incident, but said the Taliban were opposed to such actions. “An investigation is underway. At the moment, we do not know what happened “, he said, implying that the perpetrators and victims may have had personal differences.

“In the Islamic Emirate, no one has the right to deter anyone from music or anything, just to try to persuade them. That’s the way we do it, “he added. “If someone kills a person, even if (the perpetrator) is ours, it is a crime and we will take him to court to face the law,” he said.

During the first period of Taliban rule (1996-2001) music was banned.

The new Islamist government has not yet commented on the matter, but has always considered non-religious music to be contrary to Islamic law.
