Surprise: more than half of Italians over 65 consider themselves happy. This is highlighted by a survey conducted by Istat (Aspects of daily life2019) from which it emerged that the majority of Italians over the age of sixty declare themselves satisfied with their life, with the 67.4% of the interviewees who consider themselves «very happy”despite the difficulties and limitations related to advanced age.

The so-called “old age” is considered today as the golden age: it’s the best time to finally dedicate yourself to something you’ve always wanted to do and which, due to lack of time, has been postponed. In fact, 56.6% of Italians over 65 declare that they have a leisure or interest activity, which he considers one of the main sources of happiness. From the survey it was found instead that to worry the Italians after the age of 65 is the Health, main factor of concern for the majority (57.9%) of them.

But what are the factors that improve people’s lives and that reaffirm the importance of a positive approach to longevity after the age of 65? Stannah Italy, a company that has always been attentive to the needs and requirements of the elderly, has identified five, here are which ones.

Sociability is a fundamental aspect for mental and physical well-being. Socializing helps stimulate the mind and prevent loneliness and depression, promoting a greater sense of belonging and well-being. Italy is one of the countries with the highest index of happiness for the elderly in Europe, thanks also to the family culture and the strong social cohesion that characterize the country: over half (52.5%) of the elderly in Italy in fact live with their spouse or other family members. But going out, attending gyms, participating in community activities or cultural events can also be other effective ways to remain socially active.

Feed travel and passions

Plan a trip and pursue your hobbies after age 65 it can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life. In addition, it also represents an excellent opportunity to stay active, keep the mind busy and satisfy one’s curiosity, visiting still unknown places or returning to places where one enjoyed oneself in the past.

More “technological” skills

The 67.2% of the elderly in Italy use the internet regularly (Censis Survey) to communicate with family and friends, to find out about current issues and to access online public services. In general, you shouldn’t set limits that don’t exist, but rather follow the well-being that comes from your passions and interests without considering age, which shouldn’t be an obstacle to doing what makes you happy.
