The three-body problem: plot, explanation of the ending and second season

So what? It makes you wonder at the end, when swarms of insects fly across the sky leaving us dissatisfied with a whole series of questions. The three-body problem ends leaving many open doubts for the spectator, and despite this it remains the most watched series on Netflix, following its March 21 release. It is clear that the screenwriting duo David Benioff and DB Weiss (game of Thrones) and Alexander Woo (True Blood) had conceived the series as the first chapter of the science fiction trilogy by Chinese writer Liu Cixinwhich, in the first volume, actually only hints at the possible invasion of Earth by aliens.

The plot of Three-body problem

The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu

Brief summary for those who have not yet seen the series, after which it is better not to continue because there are spoilers. The story opens in 1966, during the Cultural Revolution, in China: Ye Wenjie, an astrophysicist daughter of a university professor killed by the Red Guards for not aligning himself with the regime, is sent to labor camps, where she is selected to help the Maoist scientists who are trying to contact “whoever is out there.” After finding a way to send a message into space, she receives a response from an alien who orders her not to respond any further, otherwise extraterrestrials will arrive on Earth and invade it. She is frustrated because her father's killer, also in the camp, does not repent, and discouraged by the vileness of humanity, Ye Wenjie not only responds but asks the aliens, later called San-Ti, to come and conquer the Earthto save men from their vileness.
The series then moves continuously to 2024, to Great Britain, where a whole series of inexplicable events occur in the world of Science, which the laws of physics are unable to describe, while many luminaries commit suicide. It is understood at the end of the season that these events are caused by the San-Ti themselves, who want to prevent humanity from progressing scientifically and technologically, having estimated that, even if it will take 400 years to arrive, in that period men could progress exponentially and destroy them upon arrival.
The “three-body problem” of the title is that of the solar system of alien civilization, which periodically experiences eras of chaos, being completely destroyed, and eras of order, in which it thrives, so it is looking for a more stable planet, like Earth. Here she has enlisted followers, convinced that the San-Ti will save them, and they are opposed by a group of scientists, a policeman and an unspecified secret international organization.

How does it end?

On YouTube, the screenwriters Benioff, Weiss and Woo analyzed the ending of the eighth episode, in which the head of the secret human organization is approached by aliens who predict his death, after the attempt to send a probe among the aliens It has failed.
The three revealed that the last episode mixes events from two different sections of the literary trilogy, not just from the first book (The 3-body problem) but also from the third (In the fourth dimension), to join «a moment of great desperation” (the probe capsule with Will's brain goes off course at the beginning of the third book) a a “moment of hope” (the famous insects that fill the sky, at the end of the first), a metaphor for humanity that nevertheless resists.

But when will the second season come out?

An open ending that made everyone wonder if there is a second season in sight. The writers recently confirmed that Netflix has not yet decided on its launchand in any case, as happened for Wednesday by Tim Burton, the second season was announced two months after its release on the platform.

Since the first series cost 200 million dollars, Benioff underlined the risks of such an ambitious project, but he also declared, interviewed by Empire: «iThe ending of the third book is one of my favorites of all the sagas of all time, so we want to get there.” And he added: «The most difficult thing is always the first season. Can we justify Netflix's large investment? I feel that the hype will grow, I'm confident.”

In the meantime, spoke on the podcast Inside Total Film, Woo went a little further, explaining that season two has already been imagined. However, those hoping for a series of more clarifying episodes will be disappointed. “We have some really strong ideas,” Woo said. “But everything will be a little more confusing in the future». Moreover, those who have read the books of Liu's trilogy have already pointed out how, in addition to the ending, other details of the first series are not the exact adaptation of the first novel, consequently not only are there temporal distortions but there are characters who are been changed, some minor ones given more important roles, and these differences will weigh on the development of any subsequent chapters.
