OnePlus has officially ended support for its three-year-old flagships, the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T.
The OnePlus 6 debuted in May 2018, and the OnePlus 6T was released six months later in October 2021. The OnePlus 6 originally ran Android 8.1 Oreo while the OnePlus 6T ran Android 9.0 Pie.
Last July, OnePlus shared its updated smartphone maintenance schedule, promising three major Android updates and four years of security updates for its flagship devices. However, the new schedule did not extend to some of the older flagships. OnePlus only promised two major OS updates and three years of security updates for the OnePlus 7 series, while the obsolete OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T weren’t even mentioned in the updated timeline.
However, OnePlus recently released a security update for these two models, including November 2021 Android security patches and various bug fixes.
In a recent comment on the OnePlus Community Forums, a OnePlus employee confirmed that the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T have finally ended official software support. The comment notes:
After 3 major updates and over 3 years of updates, around 60 closed betas and over 30 open betas, it’s time to close the chapter and announce the end of official software support for OnePlus 6 and 6T.”
Thankfully, that doesn’t mean you have to get rid of the OnePlus 6 or OnePlus 6T now. The models have fans among third-party developers who are going to continue to support the OnePlus 6 or OnePlus 6T with alternative firmware based on the latest version of Android.
