Various souvenirs from him Civil war, but not the treasure they were waiting for: the time capsule that was buried 134 years ago under the base of the general’s statue Robert Lee in the Richmond of Virginia revealed her secrets on Tuesday (28/12), but without satisfying them Americans collectors who were looking forward to it.
Inside the box (this is the second time capsule found there), its experts Department of Historical Resources of State of Virginia found his bullets Civil War, banknotes and coins minted by their government South, newspapers and magazines, one Almanac of 1887, books, one Bible and documents of Masonic galleries in the area. Two small wood carvings – the Masonic symbols of the ruler and diabetes – and a flag of Confederation were inside a folder. According to experts, the wood of the sculptures comes from the tree where his tomb was located Thomas “Stonewell” Jackson, a general of hers Confederation of the South.
In one of the books there was a bookmark with his profile General Li. The box also contained a fragment of a bomb used in his battle Frederiksberg, in 1862.
The most characteristic object was the drawing of a woman, kneeling in front of the coffin of the president Abraham Lincoln, who was assassinated on April 14, 1865. This sketch was published in the journal Harper’s Weekly two weeks later.
The contents of the box are “in better condition than we would expect”, commented Kate Ridgeway, the person in charge of the service, as she opened the metal time capsule with great care.
Coal is the treasure
Collectors hoped the box would contain a photograph of President Abraham Lincoln in his coffin, which many collectors are eagerly awaiting. An image that is considered a “historical bomb” and will make a splash in the collectibles market.
“They found her!” wrote in Twitter The Governor of Virginia Ralph Northham, a week after the opening of the first time capsule, which, however, disappointed the experts. “It’s obviously the time capsule that everyone was looking for,” he added, accompanying his post with photos of a rectangular metal box about 30cm long.
These “capsules” are boxes that are buried at some point, after previously put in them various characteristic objects of the time, to be found by future generations. This particular one was found under the pedestal of his imposing, equestrian statue General Robert Lee, the head of their army South during the Civil War (1861-65). The unveiling of the statue took place in 1890 at Richmond, the former capital of the South, in Virginia.
The statue, considered a symbol of the country’s slave-owning past, was removed in September amid a dispute over the value given through these monuments to people who defended slavery.
Another box found and carefully opened by him Northham contained three books and a cloth envelope with a photograph, but which had been damaged by water. There was also a coin of unknown origin inside. This capsule seems to have been hidden on the pedestal by workers who participated in the installation of the statue. One of the books was a guide for astronomers and sailors, from 1875. But another seems to have been published in 1889, two years after the capsule was buried on the spot. This fact indicated that there was a second box under the pedestal.
His statue General Li in the Richmond entered the crosshairs of anti-racist protesters after the death in May 2020 of African-American George Floyd, when a white policeman knelt in his neck in an attempt to arrest him.
