The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, stated, this Saturday (21), that it is time to “put an end to this bloodshed” in the conflict in the Middle East between Israel and the radical Islamic group Hamas, which began two years ago. weeks.
Vieira is in the city of Cairo to represent Brazil at the summit called by Egypt to discuss the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict and recorded a video before the meeting that was released by the Itamaraty press office.
“It is no longer possible for there to continue to be an absolute lack of all food, all basic necessities, even water. We need to discuss this issue before the situation becomes an even greater humanitarian problem”, stated the minister.
“The expectation is that awareness will be created that the time has come to put an end to this bloodshed and this war that, deep down, affects everyone”, he added.
In addition to Brazil and Egypt, representatives from Jordan, Qatar and Turkey, as well as other countries from the Middle East and Europe, also participate in the summit.
This is the first discussion on a peace process after the attempt to approve a resolution at the UN Security Council, chaired by Brazil during the month of October, calling for a ceasefire in the region, the opening of humanitarian corridors and the possibility to expand humanitarian aid in Palestinian territory.
Despite broad approval in the council, with 12 votes in favor, a veto from the United States made it impossible for the agreement to be accepted.
“I come to Cairo today on the instructions of President Lula to represent him and, above all, to bring the same message that we presented at the United Nations Security Council in New York, which is to arrive at the moment to take humanitarian aid measures to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza”, highlighted Vieira.
The minister stated that Hamas’ terrorist acts against Israel will also be discussed, and the issue of the Israeli reaction to these acts of violence.
