The tourist season for the South Aegean and the month of May is extremely advanced, since the first fortnight ended, as well as April with more international direct arrivals, compared to the corresponding period of the record year of 2019.
Specifically, at the four main international airports of the South Aegean islands, Mykonos, Santorini, Kos and Rhodes, 240,909 passengers arrived between May 1-15 compared to 230,201 in 2019, while along with arrivals at Karpathos International Airport, visitors to the South Aegean via international direct flights in the first fifteen days of May this year amount to 242,344.
The successful management of the pandemic in the destinations of the South Aegean in 2020 and 2021 seems to have led to the image of August 15 reminiscent of the airports of the South Aegean, from the first months of this tourist season, and especially the airport of Santorini, which marks the largest increase compared to 2019 by 23%, welcoming 32,947 passengers in the first 15 days of May (26,714 in the corresponding period of 2019).
But Rhodes, with daily arrivals of 14,000 passengers through 88 arrivals in one day only, exceeds the traffic of 2019 with an increase of 6.3%, counting 131,500 travelers compared to 123,646 of the last year before the pandemic.
In total, the arrivals at the five international airports of the South Aegean are approaching half a million, from the beginning of the tourist season until the middle of May, specifically the 445,693.
British Germans and Italians are the top markets
Unsurprisingly, tourist flows by country of origin moved at least for the month of April, as Great Britain and Germany occupy the first and second place respectively for Rhodes and themselves in reverse order for Kos, while for the islands of Santorini and of Mykonos, the largest reservoirs of visitors are Great Britain and Italy.
The data was announced by the South Aegean Tourism Initiative created in 2020 to promote and protect the image of the South Aegean as a tourist destination and works for its unified coordination and joint representation both domestically and internationally. The South Aegean Tourism Initiative consists of the South Aegean Region, the Municipality of Rhodes and productive, scientific and social bodies of the Dodecanese and the Cyclades.
