The study was commissioned for the railway connection of the port of Volos with the existing network of OSE, VIPE Magnesia and the airport of Nea Aghialos.

The joint venture ADT – OMEGA – EMBELEIA was declared the contractor, with a total offered price of 1.41 million euros and an average implied discount of 50.2%.

The project of laying a new single railway line, approximately 35 km long, aims to connect the Larissa – Volos railway line with the VIPE of Magnesia, the SOVEL factory in Almyros of Magnesia and the airport of Nea Anchialos.

Also, at the railway connection of the VIPE-2 (in the area of A.K. Velestinos of the PATHE highway), with a total length of approximately 6.8 km, with the Volos – Larissa railway line.

Finally, in the railway connection of the projets of the port of Volos, with a total length of approximately 2.2 km, directly from the railway station of Volos.

The benefits of rail connectivity

As stated in the study announcement, the purpose of the rail link is to cover firstly the transport of goods by rail from the area of the SOVEL heavy industry complex to northern Greece and then to Europe.

At the same time, the new railway line will have the possibility, with the creation of S. Stations / Stops, to be an extension of the existing suburban Larissa – Volos, to be connected to the facilities of the Aghialos airport and to serve the movements of the residents of the wider Almyros area, with the creation of the proposed S. Station in this area.

The axis of the railway line under study has a length of approximately 35 kilometers and connects the coastal area of Volos with the plain of Agios Georgios – Velestinos and with the lowland area of Almyros.

In particular, the railway line will start at the location where S. Latomeiou Station is located today, from where, initially heading west to approximately Aerinos and then south, it ends at the SOVEL factory at the southern end of the Almyros plain.

The re-opening of the railway connection of the port of Volos is not relatively high in cost, but great in importance, as recently mentioned, in an informative meeting with representatives of the press, TAIPED officials.

This, because the port of Volos is going to be used through an international tender, so any connection with the OSE is a reinforcing “paper”.

From 1988 until today, the port of Volos maintains a position among the five Greek ports with the largest traffic of goods, presenting prospects for cruises as well.

The port of Volos in 2020 had revenues of 4.8 million euros and in 2019 revenues of 5.3 million euros and profits of 0.7 million euros and 1.3 million euros respectively.
