The startup of co-founder and former OnePlus CEO Carl Pei has finally officially unveiled its first mobile device. The novelty is called Nothing Phone (1), and today it is the most unusual smartphone on the market. Unlike Apple, which carefully hides every detail of its devices before the official announcement, Nothing was very eager to share their brainchild, so the appearance and many key features of Phone (1) were revealed long before the presentation. Thus, many already have a clear idea of what Nothing Phone (1) is.
The main feature of the smartphone is its rear panel, made of transparent glass, under which LED elements are installed. They are placed on the top, bottom, around the camera and wireless charging coil and glow in various scenarios. For example, the strip next to the USB port flashes while charging, and all elements flash during notifications and calls. In addition, LED elements can act as additional lighting for photo and video shooting. The manufacturer calls this feature a way to communicate with a smartphone.
Inside is a 6.55-inch 1080p OLED display with a maximum brightness of 1200 nits. The screen refresh rate is 120Hz, but it may vary depending on the content. There is a small cutout in the top left corner for the 16-megapixel camera. The display also has a built-in fingerprint scanner.
Nothing Phone (1) is built on the Snapdragon 778G Plus platform. Perhaps many expected to see the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset here, but the company explained its choice by the best balance of performance, power consumption, heat dissipation and cost. In terms of memory, the manufacturer offers configurations with 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of storage.
There are two 50-megapixel sensors on the back. One is the main one with f / 1.8 aperture, optical and electronic stabilization, as well as a number of software functions. The other is ultra-wide-angle with a viewing angle of 114 degrees and the ability to shoot macro from a distance of up to 4 cm. A 4500 mAh battery is responsible for battery life with support for wired charging up to 33 W or wireless up to 15 W. The manufacturer also claims protection against water and dust according to the IP53 standard – the smartphone will withstand rain, but it cannot be completely immersed in water.
The device is running the Android 12 operating system with the Nothing shell. The advantage of this software is the integration with third party products. For example, you can control certain functions of Tesla vehicles directly from the quick settings menu. The company promises three years of Android updates and four years of security updates (every two months).
Nothing Phone (1) will go on sale on July 21st at £399 for the 8GB/128GB version and £449 for the 8GB/256GB version. The smartphone in the maximum configuration (12 / 256 GB) will cost 499 pounds (about 34,700 rubles).
