The Treasury of New Hampshire warned of crypto-meshs who pretend to be officials of the department. Attackers call the victims on the phone and, under various pretexts, ask them to transfer money to Bitcoins.

The agency warned that scammers use fake phone numbers of real state bodies and are trying to convince the interlocutors that their confidential data were compromised. To prevent theft of money due to leakage of financial data, scammers ask people to withdraw all their funds from bank accounts, and then transfer them to bitcoins to a “safe account”, which is actually controlled by attackers.

The treasury emphasized that it did not request payments or transfers in bitcoins. Therefore, when receiving such phone calls, it is worth immediately interrupting the conversation. Local residents are recommended to report incidents to the Center for complaints about Internet crime (IC3) at the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and local law enforcement agencies.

Cryptocurrency fraudsters were intensified due to the fact that recently the New Hampshire became one of the first US states to adopt the law on the creation of a strategic reserve in bitcoins. Governor Kelly Ayotte signed a bill allowing the state treasury to allocate up to 5% of the state budget for bitcoins and other digital assets, whose market capitalization exceeds $ 500 billion. Now only bitcoin is suitable for this criterion.

In January, the FBI reported that over the year the department was able to save more than 4,300 potential victims from cryptocurrency scammers – with the help of law enforcement officers, they managed to preserve about $ 285 million.
