Employees of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine are the first in the country to receive a salary in the state digital currency.
In a recent interview published by the Ukrainian news agency TSN, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Head of the Ministry of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fedorov shared his thoughts on the possibility of using the digital currency of the Central Bank when paying salaries to civil servants.
“One of the first pilot projects that we are now considering is the payment of salaries to employees of the Ministry of Digital Transformation in electronic hryvnia,” Fedorov said. The official stressed:
“It is necessary to test the viability of the national digital currency. Therefore, the initial deployment of e-hryvnia will focus on a small controlled use case. ”
The National Bank of Ukraine and the Ministry of Digital Transformation, in cooperation with the Stellar Development Foundation, have been working for several years to create a strategy for the development of digital assets and a project to create a state digital currency.
Recently, the central bank of Ukraine received permission to issue digital hryvnia after the country’s legislature passed a new law on payment services. The signed law was aimed at adapting Ukrainian legislation to the legal framework of the European Union and integrating the country’s payment system with the EU system.
Using the digital currency of the Central Bank to pay civil servants is becoming a traditional form of testing pilot projects in many countries. Back in June, China, one of the leading countries in the CBDC arena, introduced a system for paying salaries in digital yuan.
