The Ukrainian in Istanbul

At 4 pm Turkish time, the Russian negotiators will arrive in Istanbul, as announced by Kremlin sources.

The news of Turkey’s choice for the next round of negotiations between the Russia and Ukraine committees had been announced by a Ukrainian negotiator. Then there was a telephone conversation between Erdogan-Putin and Tsavousoglu-Lavrov where he clarified that the talks will take place between March 28 and 30.

Turkish diplomatic sources and Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu himself have stated that the positions of the two sides are very close to four of the six points, including the guarantees that Ukraine will not become a member of NATO. But in the other two, the Donbach regime and the recognition of Crimea as Russian territory, there is still a gap.

Ankara is not just pursuing a mediating role, which it has already shown it is playing. A ceasefire and the end of the war will be a relief to Turkish diplomacy that does not simply have the hoarseness of managing the straits and implementing the Montreux Treaty.

The thorn of S400

It has suddenly found itself in the eye of the storm, while its relations with Washington are at a nadir on the occasion of the S400, while relations with Moscow, which is building Turkey’s first nuclear reactor, are particularly good for a NATO country.

Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu yesterday had a new verbal episode with a journalist of an American media on the subject of S400.

Turkey now manages even more delicate balances by avoiding harsh sanctions on Moscow. As much as this situation may seem to provide economic benefits to the trying Turkish economy due to flights carrying Russians through Istanbul, the ruble trade and tourism, things are not so simple.

Successful management of this crisis, which has brought the world to the brink of world war, can change the West’s negative attitude towards Turkey. But if the crisis is prolonged and worsened, it can be catastrophic in the face of critical dilemmas that need to be answered clearly. On the other hand, it is known that the one who will be in the middle always presses it.
