The Ukrainian parliament has overwhelmingly approved the bill that restores the independence of the Archas of the fight against corruption, in replacement of a previous text denounced by the civil society of Ukraine and the European Union. In total, 331 MPs voted in favor of the new text presented by President Volodimir Zelenski at the plenary session of the body that was broadcast directly on television. Prime Minister Yulia Svirindenko welcomed the outcome of the vote, giving the assurance that the new law “eliminates the risk of involvement in the work of corruption”. “It is a clear answer to the expectations of our civil society and European partners,” he wrote on social networks. The previous text that had been voted on July 22 set the National Corruption Combat Service, the NABU and the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Corruption, SAP, under the direct control of the Attorney General, who is appointed by the head of the state.
