The Ukrainian military said today it had hit Russian positions in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine, an area almost entirely under Russian control, and that Kyiv was worried that Moscow would soon hold a referendum on its annexation.
“Our air force has hit Russian positions, points where equipment and personnel have been concentrated, and warehouses around five cities in the Kherson region,” the Ukrainian army’s general staff said on Facebook today.
Almost the entire province of Kherson was occupied by Russian troops from the first days of the invasion of Ukraine, on February 24.
This province, which is bathed by the Black and Azov Seas, has an area of about 28,000 square kilometers and before the war had a population of more than one million.
One of the Russian negotiators had mentioned on June 1 the possibility of holding a referendum in the areas of Ukraine occupied by Moscow, something that Kyiv opposes.
Russia held a referendum in 2014 on the annexation of Crimea.
