The UN 2030 agenda in a photographic story

When Banca Generali asked the photographer Stefano Guindani one way to communicate climate change and the initiatives underway to tackle it, an ambitious idea has taken shape: BG4SDGs – Time to Change, the photographic project aimed at exploring the world of sustainability through the universal matrix of the 17 SDGs, the goals defined by the UN in the document «Transforming our world. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development “signed in Paris in 2015.

Through the lens of Stefano Guindani, famous fashion and reportage photographer, former author of Do you Know, we wanted to investigate the state of realization of the 17 goals from the United Nations and for each of them the intent is proactive. Not only is the aim of highlighting the negative action of man on the environment and the community, but above all the extraordinary ability of man to recover through innovative and sustainable solutions. A research that takes Guindani beyond the Italian borders, looking for critical cases and situations of excellence even abroad: Brazil, Norway and Australia, but also the United States and South Africa. Alongside him is the anthropologist Alberto Salza, who takes care of the texts of the project and suggests some of the projects to be monitored.

«I hope my images are able to draw attention to such an important issue. The pourpose of BG4SDGs – Time to Change it is not only to put the spotlight on the well-known problems that afflict our planet, but it is above all to suggest possible solutions. Thanks to this project I was able to discover and deepen my knowledge of virtuous realities that with commitment pursue common objectives: to make human life more respectful of our planet and to ensure a future; because the actions we take today in favor of sustainability will guarantee the perpetration of human life and a better future for all », said Stefano Guindani.

The project is a work in progress and the first published shots (which you can browse in gallery) concern the first UN objective under investigation, namely SDG number 12, “Responsible consumption and production”. To frame the problem and provide the solution, Stefano Guindani photographed the work of Ecopneus, a Milanese company that aims to trace, collect and treat one of the major sources of pollution on our planet: tires at the end of their life cycle. After recovering them, Ecopneus restores a life cycle to these materials by converting them into athletics tracks, soccer fields and basketball courts that are built on the outskirts of large cities, thus also creating new associative spaces for the community.

Guindani’s photographs will then be published on the website and social channels of Banca Generali and the artist himself, with a calendar that provides for the story of an SDG for each month, for a total duration of 17 months. At the end of 2022, the most representative shots will be the subject of a traveling photographic exhibition and a dedicated catalog.
