The UN condemned Tuesday the expulsion of almost thousands of pregnant and lactating women from the Dominican Republic to Haiti within a month, noting that it was in breach of international rules. Haiti is experiencing serious gang problems. The United Nations Group on Humanitarian Affairs in a statement stressed that “it is deeply concerned about increasing the number of pregnant and lactating women deported by the Dominican Republic to Haiti, in breach of international rules.” Since April 22, the International Organization for Immigration (IOM), in cooperation mainly with the Aein authorities, “provided assistance in an average of 15 pregnant women and 15 breastfeeders a day” at two crossings at the border of the two states, which share the island of Espanyola, according to the announcement.
