The UN expresses “deep sadness” over the shipwreck in the Aegean with three dead children

The shipwreck northeast of Chios, which claimed the lives of three children, was mentioned by Stéphane Dujarric, the representative of the UN Secretary General, during the regular press briefing at the headquarters of the international organization in New York. “Our colleagues at the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) are deeply saddened by the news of the shipwreck in the Aegean, in which three young girls, aged 5 to 10, were reported dead off Chios in Greece. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported today that another terrible shipwreck occurred near Lampedusa (Italy), where nine people were confirmed dead,” said Mr. Dujarric, as reported by the Athens News Agency. Antonio Guterres' spokesman added that it was a “reminder of the dangers that refugees and migrants face every day at the hands of smugglers as they seek a better life.”
