The immediate release of about 530 people in Belarus, which have been designated by human rights organizations as political prisoners, among them three opposition candidates, demanded today (5/7) the UN Special Rapporteur, comparing the practices of the government of Belarus with the practices of totalitarian states.
Presenting her annual report to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Anais Marin, according to the APE-MPE, described the “Deteriorating” situation in Belarus after the controversial election of Alexander Lukashenko to the presidency last year.
Referring to forced landing of Ryanair passenger aircraft Last May at the Minsk airport and the arrest of Belarusian journalist Roman Protashevich, he said it showed the Belarussian government’s intention to eliminate all forms of dissent by comparing its methods with those of totalitarian states.
“It is a form of liquidation reminiscent of practices used by totalitarian states,” said the UN special rapporteur.
