The UN Security Council condemns the execution of political prisoners by the Myanmar junta

The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday condemned the executions of four democracy activists in Myanmar by the military regime and called for the immediate release of all those arbitrarily imprisoned, including former president Win Min and former de facto leader of the government, Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

In its statement adopted unanimously by its fifteen member states, the UN Security Council calls for dialogue on reconciliation “in accordance with the will and interest of the people of Myanmar”, an end to violence, respect for fundamental human rights and unhindered access to humanitarian aid.

Myanmar’s military, which seized power in a coup on February 1, 2021, announced on Monday that it had executed four activists who were complicit in “terrorist acts”. It was the first executions of anti-junta activists in the Southeast Asian country in decades, according to the NGO Association for Aid to Political Prisoners.

Defying the international outcry, the military regime defended the executions, which it said were “justice for the people”.
