The tension peaks for the five stranded passengers of the Titan submarinewhich has been missing since last Sunday, while the sand in the hourglass continues to dwindle, along with hopes that those on board will be found alive.
In 1973, however, a real miracle took place at a depth of 480 meters and after 84 hours.
THE Roger Mallinson rescued with his diving partner, Roger Chapmanbeing trapped 1,575 feet (480 meters) under the sea in Ireland in a 6-foot-wide (1.8-meter) submarine.
The two men were laying a transatlantic telephone cable 150 miles off its coast Corkin a small submarine named Pisces IIIwhen the engine room hatch was accidentally opened by the surface ship they were tied to.
More than a ton of water began to pour into the self-contained rear section of the submarine, and after hanging from the surface ship, their mooring line broke and they plummeted to the sea floor at about 40 miles per hour.
“It was about 30 seconds before we hit the bottom. We turned off the depth gauge at 500 feet as it could have gone off and got pillows and curled up to try and prevent injury. We managed to find white cloth to put in our mouths so we wouldn’t bite our tongues,” he said in a 2013 interview. Mallinson.

The titanic rescue operation
Rescue crews immediately got to work, but faced a number of technical problems as they began the rescue operation.
After three days and several failed attempts, the rescue submarine was able to attach a hook and towline to the Pisces III and lift it to the surface.
Once there, it took another 30 minutes for the cabin hatch to open.
“We had 72 hours to live when we started the dive, so we managed another 12.5 hours. When we looked at the cylinder, we had 12 minutes of oxygen,” he had said Chapman in the BBC.
