The United States began installing the Aegis missile defense system in Poland: photo

The installation of the American missile defense system Aegis has begun in Poland. This was reported by the press service of the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA).

As noted, the installation of the Aegis Ashore missile defense system began in Redzikovo, Poland. Aegis Ashore is designed and built in collaboration with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).

According to MDA, as part of the project in Redzikovo in May, four fixed SPY-1D (V) radar arrays and one fire control system illuminator were raised.

The Polish SPY-1D (V) radar reportedly has 360-degree coverage and will provide continuous long-range missile defense.

All Aegis Ashore facilities use a defense system identical to those used on the US Navy Aegis ships, and are designed to detect, track, engage and destroy ballistic missiles in flight from facilities ashore.

The Aegis Ashore system uses Standard Missile-3 interceptors, which do not carry an explosive warhead, but kinetically destroy enemy missiles.

As noted, $ 182 million was allocated for the construction of a ground-based air defense complex for the MDA and the US Navy in Redzikovo.

The US Navy expects to take the Aegis Ashore Poland facility into service no earlier than 2022.

  • On May 31, it was reported that the British navy is testing artificial intelligence and machine learning systems that will improve the country’s and NATO’s air defense at sea.
