The United States is “playing with fire,” Beijing warned today, following remarks by US President Joe Biden that Washington would defend Taiwan if China tried to seize it.
The United States is “using Taiwan’s paper to contain China and they will burn themselves,” said Xu Fenglian, a spokesman for Taiwan’s Chinese Affairs Bureau in the Council of State, according to Xinhua.
From Washington, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin assured that the policy of “one China” pursued by the US regarding Taiwan “has not changed”. Austin made the remarks when asked to comment on Biden’s remarks, to which he said yes when asked if the United States would “militarily defend Taiwan” if China invaded the island.
“This is a commitment we have made,” he said. “We agreed with the policy of one China, we signed it (…) but the idea that (Taiwan) could be occupied by force is simply not appropriate.
The Chinese “are already flirting with the danger right now, flying so close (to Taiwan) and with all the maneuvers they are attempting,” he noted.
A few hours later, however, in a press conference he gave to the Pentagon, Lloyd assured that nothing has changed. “As the president said, the policy of one China has not changed. He reiterated this policy and our commitment to peace and stability on the Taiwan Strait.”
