The unreleased Intel Alder Lake processors have an unexpected problem. Older cooling systems may have poor contact with the CPU

Intel Alder Lake processors use the new LGA 1700 socket. The shape of the socket will also change, which means that the old cooling systems will not work. And although manufacturers of various coolers have already started producing special kits for installing old models on a new socket, as it turned out, in some situations there will be other problems.

The fact is that the height of the socket with the installed CPU is less than that of previous generations. This also means that when installing a cooling system, the pressure of the cooler on the processor may be insufficient. The situation is aggravated by the shape of the new CPUs, which, together with the changed height, leads to the fact that liquid cooling systems with round heatsink soles can have poor contact with the processor surface.

In particular, this is the case with the Corsair H115 and Cooler Master ML, while the MSI models are doing well.

We do not yet know how poor contact affects the temperature characteristics – tests will show this. But in any case, those who want to acquire a new Intel platform and keep the old cooler, whatever it may be, should attend to this issue.
