Several years after Elon Musk announced that Tesla had abandoned eye tracking as a driver attentiveness tracking method because it was “ineffective,” owners of new Tesla vehicles began receiving an update with the feature activated.
According to the note accompanying the software update numbered 2021.4.15.11, the camera in the passenger compartment of electric vehicles, mounted above the rear-view mirror, “monitors and warns about the driver’s inattention when the autopilot is on.”
This puts Tesla on a par with other manufacturers that include in-cabin cameras to monitor the driver, rather than relying solely on steering wheel sensors. According to numerous reports on the network, drivers often cheated the old Tesla system when using autopilot.
